The Atletico Madrid star, whose missed penalty cost his club the 2016 Champions League final, has penned an emotional apology to the fans.
Atletico Madrid full back Juanfran has written a heartfelt apology to Rojiblancos fans following their Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.
Though he had a great
game in Milan in general – his superb cross set up Yannick Carrasco’s equalizer – the Spaniard’s night ended in the worst possible way after his penalty miss paved the way for Cristiano Ronaldo to blast home and seal Real’s UCL win from the spot.
The defender, as Real players wheeled away in celebration, walked over to the Atletico Madrid fans’ corner in tears and bowed in apology.
To signify their forgiveness the Rojiblancos faithful stood up and applauded the player. Watch the incredible scene below.
Juanfran followed up the on-pitch apology with a touching letter to the fans in which he promised to repay their support with a UCL trophy one day.
The letter was published on the Atletico Madrid official website on May 30th.
“Hello Atleticos,” wrote Juanfran. “I have asked the club to address all of you with this letter to tell you everything I feel.
“I will never forget your displays of affection when I came to ask
for your forgiveness. Seeing my tears reflected in the faces of the
thousands of Atleticos that packed that end of the stadium helped me
cope with the tremendous sadness I felt in those hard times. As well as
the support of my team-mates, coaches, and all the people that makes
this big family.
“I also want to thank you for always believing in us and, above all,
for proving that being an Atletico is something very special, different,
and that our heart beats stronger than any other.
“Two years ago, I told you that we would return to a final, now, I
tell you that Gabi, our captain, will lift the Champions League sooner
or later, and we will celebrate it all together in Neptuno [the statue
in Madrid].
“I love you very much and GO ATLETI.”
